Waste Fire Safety Update

Are you legally compliant?

Important Fire Safety Update

Our waste recycling supplier Recorra has seen a large increase in the number of fires occurring at their Materials Recovery Facility and in their vehicles, due to batteries and vapes being thrown away in the recycling or waste that are collected. Batteries can easily be crushed as they process materials, and crushed batteries short, heat up and cause fires.  Not only does this damage vehicles and machinery, it also puts staff and the public at serious health and safety risk. It also poses a risk for your own staff and infrastructure, as incorrect disposal can start a fire in your premises.

Any battery can cause a problem, from AAA dry cell batteries to lithium batteries found in laptops and phones. Many electronic devices contain batteries that people may not even be aware of. A big new problem is disposable vapes. Even old batteries that seem dead will often contain enough residual energy to start a fire.

Your Legal Obligation

It is your company’s legal responsibility to segregate and dispose of batteries and vapes compliantly. If not followed and disposed of properly, you will be in breach of your Duty of Care obligations and could be fined up to £10,000.

Procuria offer a vape recycling solution that can ensure your business remains legally compliant. You can find all the information you need on this by reading this article here.
