Are you aware of the new waste regulations?

The Environment Agency (EA) have updated local authorities and waste management companies about waste items that could contain POPs. Specific guidance has been issued for soft furnishings including sofas, cushions, and some textiles.

What are POPs?

  • Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are organic substances that persist in the environment, accumulate in living organisms, and may cause long-term adverse effects on our health via food-chains and the environment.
  • Items containing POPs are banned from landfill and regulations have been in place since 2007.
  • UK manufacturers of these items stopped using POPs between 2002 and 2011, but imported items had some POPs chemicals as late as 2019.
  • In December 2022 the EA clarified that compliance for identifying, classifying, handling and disposing of POPs waste will be measured against these regulations from 31 December 2022.
  • It is the waste producer’s responsibility to know if soft furnishings waste they produce may contain POPs.
  • Soft furnishing waste not containing POPS must be evidenced via MSDS or import documentation.
